The Glass Room

Kitchen splashback, Christchurch, New Zealand

DESCRIPTION
I really do like the way this all lays out. The kitchen has great detail, the timber, the flooring, the brickwork all very strong visually, then finally the glass splash back is added providing a warm strong finish to compliment all the other elements. It is the perfect accompaniment conjuring up thoughts of home baking and a deliciously rich mocha.

Reflex

DESCRIPTION
Clean lines presented by TGR REFLEX. Unlike traditional mirror which in the view of the writer is "too honest'. Grey Reflex provides a weight of tone which allows the panel to work with other elements of the kitchen. The biggest bonus is that the glass can be toughened which normal mirror can not be. Never be tempted by untoughened glass the cost difference is not significant but the issues can be disastrous.

Duo colours to enhance the overall space

DESCRIPTION
Using a combination of single colours in a kitchen splashback can provide a strong focus without overpowering the space. As we look to utilize colour on glass we need not allow colour to control the entire kitchen or out of fear try to make the glass recede into the background. Their are other ways of achieving balance and strength.

Add a bit of zing. When your home calls for a lift.
Is this a good choice? Well that depends. For this to work you need to be able to make it belong. The rest of the decor needs to compliment this relatively radical approach.
Its great that the kitchen allows us the scope to do this. But if it isnt supported by the decor in adjoining rooms or the style of the building then it will be erroneous and very shortlived.
However if everything else supports this vibrancy then this is a very sharp look.

Clean and sharp.
Black can be a very good choice in more instances that many people realize. Their are drawbacks too ie a mirror type reflection, smudges etc. But overall black does come out a winner in many situations.
In this example the splashback makes a huge statement but it does not impose any restrictions on other colours being brought into this kitchen. Whether you accessorise with orange, yellow, purple, green, or pink or a mixture of all of these. A black splashback will not be simply kind it will make those other colours look even better.

Matching existing wall colour

DESCRIPTION
One of the biggest issues for people who are looking at putting in a glass splashback is to select a colour that is going to stand the test of time. Sometimes it is more sensible to not use a different colour. Just because you can choose any colour in the world, does not actually mean that you should.

Glass splashback in christchurch

DESCRIPTION
This kitchen was added to a much older home, a beautiful 2 storey building near Hagley Park built early in the 20th century. The contemporary kitchen linked directly to a vestibule which was appropriately decorated true to its heritage. To provide a definitive link I chose a colour and tone that whilst unique to this space, linked this furthest end of the kitchen to the house proper, and used a properly weighted base tone to keep in contact with the timber floor. This approach ensured colours and tones were in harmony with each other, keeping a firm link with the original home, with the style and comfort of a contemporary kitchen.

DESCRIPTION
Non reflective glass eliminates the mirror effect we see in standard glass splashbacks, providing a finish that many relate to sea washed glass as is sometimes found on coastal beaches.

Glass kitchen splashback in christchurch

DESCRIPTION
This is actually one of my most favorite kitchens. This kitchen is set on a rural property, it is not big but it is perfectly balanced. The visual relationship between the square sinks and the appliances is superb. Its a kitchen that is designed to be used and easy to get about in and it delivers all of that. What for me makes it so special is that it did not need the splashback to do anything, the splashback did not match the cabinetry as I believe this would be far too clinical, instead a deeper tone of the wall colour was chosen. To me this kitchen despite its smaller size is superbly designed and appointed. Difficult to find a more practical kitchen. OK I don't like seeing through the glass doors either but other than that, perfect.

A clean green splash back brings a fresh sharp contrast to kitchens, particularly if the surrounding palette is predominantly neutral tones.

This vibrant red splashback gives this kitchen in Christchurch a strong focal point and identity. Kitchens can be fairly plain so having the versatility to inject a splash of colour can add a great deal of vitality to any home. Even to the point of warming the feel of a kitchen when Christchurch is in the depths of winter.
Power points in this kitchen do not pose a problem as we simply allow for these when we are producing our glass panels. Each panel is custom produced for your kitchen at our Christchurch glass studio.

Note the design work on the glass cupboard fronts which gives depth to the kitchen surfaces. By having the designs recede slightly we have allowed the crisp green to dominate, whilst simultaneously building up the visual strength of the kitchen at floor to bench height.

Note with this client we decided to match the panel colour on the island front. This extends the kitchen forward and gives a nice relationship between front and back.
